Byrnes Down Real Estate

West Ashley, South Carolina

Byrnes Down was one of the first West Ashley neighborhoods in the Ashley River District to experience revitalization. Often referenced with Avondale, the Byrnes Down neighborhood and its homes are only similar to Avondale in location, as Byrnes Down rests across Savannah Highway (Highway 17) from Avondale. A snapshot of Byrnes Down will reveal a quaint, established neighborhood with streets such as Craven Avenue, Colleton Drive, Timmerman Avenue, Lyttleton Street, Sothel Avenue and Campbell Drive lined with modestly-sized 1940’s brick cottages. Byrnes Down is often confused with South Windermere because Yeadon Avenue connects to Campbell Drive which veres into Chadwick Drive.

It is rare to find a Byrnes Down home for sale that has not been renovated. Despite their smaller size - usually 2 bedrooms with one full bath even after renovation - Byrnes Down homes remain popular because the neighborhood’s location and character are both hard to come by. Byrnes Down is so close to Downtown Charleston, especially MUSC, that its residents can walk or bike to the Charleston Peninsula via the Ashley River Memorial Bridges and not break a sweat (depending on the season).

Byrnes Down can easily be considered the principal catalyst of West Ashley’s revitalized “Designer District.” On the same side of Savannah Highway lay Gene’s Haufbrau and Avondale Wine and Cheese, which connect to Byrnes Down. These institutions have Byrnes Down’s surge in popularity to thank for their steady flow of patrons.
