Charleston Area Real Estate Information
About 10 years ago Johns Island was known for its tomatoes and how to get to Kiawah and Seabrook Islands. Today, Johns Island is a hotspot for real estate speculation thanks to the new Stono River bridge which connects Johns Island to James Island; the new Limehouse bridge which connects Johns Island to West Ashley and the much anticipated I526 extension which will connect Johns Island to the greater Charleston metro area. Before the funding for the I526 extension to James Island was approved in 2005, Johns Island neighborhoods such as Summertrees, Barberry Woods, Whitney Lake, The Villages in St Johns Woods, Gift Plantation, Grimball Gates and Rushland Plantation, The Commons at Fenwick Hall and The Bend at River Road were already under construction.
Acres of undisturbed marshes, tidal creeks and rivers characterize Johns Island. For approximately 1400 years Angel Oak has grown in the same fertile soil coastal farmers use to this day to produce crops year-round.
Johns Island real estate has developed a “green” reputation. In response to concerns about ecological impact associated with developing the the second largest sea island on the east coast environmentally friendly Earthcraft homes are becoming standard for Johns Island new construction. Johns Island’s infrastructure is slowly being upgraded or expanded to accommodate the needs of future residents. All new construction on Johns Island is supposed to follow “Smart Growth” or “new urbanism” guidelines for sustainable communities - think of it as the antidote to urban sprawl.
Contrary to popular belief, Johns Island is close to downtown Charleston. The drive from Johns Island to Downtown Charleston is about 7 miles taking Maybank HWY through James Island. By way of the new Limehouse bridge, the drive from Johns Island to West Ashley can take less than five minutes.
