West Ashley, South Carolina Real Estate
West Ashley’s new and old construction, interwoven along Folly Road, the Intracoastal Waterway and Ashley River, is one of the best examples of the kind of redevelopment, renovation and expansion underway in metropolitan Charleston area real estate.
Aptly named for its geographic proximity to the Charleston Peninsula, West Ashley, also known as “West of the Ashley,” is an excellent example of what’s happening in the metropolitan Charleston area real estate market. Some of West Ashley’s signature 1920s - 1960s suburban neighborhoods are known as the Ashley River District located across the Ashley River Memorial Bridge from Downtown Charleston include The Crescent, Wappoo Heights, Byrnes Down, Avondale, South Windermere and new construction condominium developments such as Albemarle Point and Ripley Light Marina.
As West Ashley began to emerge as an industrial and business area in the 1920s, the neighborhoods in the Ashley River District provided homes for workers and shoppers alike. Suburban West Ashley quickly developed its own central business district in the 1950s; about three miles of retail stores, restaurants and businesses were then built along both sides of the Savannah Highway.
West Ashley is now home to about 60,000 people and spans for miles. Real Estate values in the Ashley River District have soared over the past decade due to increasing demand for 1950s homes - most of which are purchased, renovated and resold within a few years. In response to demand for “turn key” property, a little further from Downtown Charleston, new construction subdivisions such as Hunt Club, Grand Oaks Plantation, Carolina Bay and Poplar Grove have sprouted up.
Scattered throughout West Ashley are well-known historic sites and parks. Charles Town, the original 1660 English settlement that became Charleston, is located in West Ashley. While preserving the past Drayton Hall, Magnolia Plantation and Middleton Place remain vibrant to this day hosting festivals, weddings and guided tours.
